Winthrop Brown is a partner in the Firm's Washington, D.C. office and a member of Milbank's Global Finance practice group. He concentrates on international banking and securities law, with particular emphasis on legal issues confronting U.S. operations of foreign banks and their affiliates. Mr. Brown has over 20 years of experience in advising leading non-U.S. banking organizations on a wide range of matters involving the sale to U.S. customers of financial products and services from both U.S. and non-U.S. locations. These include the establishment of U.S. branches and the acquisition of U.S. banks; the establishment of broker-dealers, including Section 20 companies; the sale into the United States from abroad of banking products, securities, commodities and financial instruments, including investment funds; qualification as a financial holding company; and the ongoing compliance of established operations with U.S. banking and securities laws and regulations.
Mr. Brown frequently lectures and participates in panel discussions and seminars on these issues. He also has been active in, and served on the boards of, various local nonprofit organizations. He is a member of the District of Columbia Bar. Before joining Milbank, Mr. Brown was partner and chair of the financial institutions practice group at Shaw Pittman, resident in its Washington, D.C. office.
He was listed in The International Who's Who of Business Lawyers 2007.
Mr. Brown received his Juris Doctorate from the George Washington University School of Law in 1974. He also received a Masters of Science degree from the London School of Economics in 1971 and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Stanford University in 1970. |
