Willy Shih is a member of QD Vision's board of directors as well as Executive Vice President and Co-Head of Thomson's Technology Group. He is a recognized expert in the field of intellectual property, with a focus on patent licensing and litigation. Most recently, Willy was with the Eastman Kodak Company, where he was president of the Display & Components Group. This group included Kodak’s OLED business, as well as businesses in CCD and CMOS sensors, optical display films, and thin-film cholesteric liquid crystal displays. Simultaneously, Willy was head of Corporate Intellectual Property Strategy for Kodak. From August, 1997 through late 2003, Willy was president of Kodak’s Digital & Applied Imaging business, which encompassed Kodak’s consumer digital imaging businesses. His team grew this business to well over US$1B, with the number one market share of consumer digital cameras in the United States, and top three market positions in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Australia, and China. Prior to his position at Kodak, Dr. Shih was vice president of Marketing for Technical Computing at Silicon Graphics Computer Systems in Mountain View, California. He was responsible for the marketing of SGI’s high-end server systems for high performance computing and the ONYX graphics supercomputer systems in fields ranging from defense imaging, visual simulation, and entertainment imaging to advanced scientific computation in fields ranging from engineering analysis to computational chemistry, earth resources, and operations research. Shih has also worked at the Digital Equipment Corporation and IBM, with responsibilities ranging from engineering management to UNIX and Windows NT marketing to the development of strategic alliances. At IBM, he was one of the principal architects of the PowerPC alliance between Apple, Motorola, and IBM. Willy holds Bachelor’s degrees in both chemistry and life sciences from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley. He has a wife and two daughters. |
