Willem F.C. de Weerd has extensive experience in patent prosecution (U.S. and foreign), large-scale litigation (Hatch-Waxman Act litigation), opinion writing (infringement, validity and patentability), and due diligence studies. Dr. de Weerd has represented clients in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical and chemical industries, as well as academic and basic research organizations, both small and large. He has worked in a variety of technology areas, including biotechnology, pharmaceutical, biochemistry, immunology, medical diagnostics, organic chemistry, and inorganic chemistry (metallurgy/alloy chemistry).
Dr. de Weerd joined Kenyon & Kenyon in 2005 from the intellectual property law firm of Rothwell, Figg, Ernst & Manbeck in Washington, D.C., where he was an associate.
Prior to entering the field of law, Dr. de Weerd earned a Ph.D. in biochemistry and conducted research in the area of hormone signal-transduction at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio. His work involved studying the activation and subsequent desensitization of the Bradykinin B2 receptor, primarily the role of cell surface caveolae in desensitizing the Bradykinin B2 receptor. Before earning his Ph.D. in biochemistry Dr. de Weerd studied chemistry at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. His work at Utrecht University involved studying lipid enzymology, and through an exchange program with the University of Florida, protein chemistry and enzymology of aspartic acid proteinases. |
