Dr Massey became a full professor of physics at Brown University in 1975, researching theoretical and solid state physics. From 1979 to 1984, he was director of the Argonne National Laboratory, one of the US Department of Energy’s largest research centres and, from 1984 to 1991, he was vice president for research and professor of physics at the University of Chicago. In 1991, he was appointed director of the US National Science Foundation, and was provost and senior vice president academic affairs for The University of California System from 1993 to 1995. Dr Massey was appointed by President George W Bush to serve on the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology in 2001. Until his retirement in June 2007, he was president of Morehouse College, one of the leading undergraduate colleges in the US. He is a non-executive director of Bank of America, McDonald’s Corporation, the Mellon Foundation and the Commonwealth Fund. Dr Massey is active in several professional and civic organizations, including the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Smithsonian Institution and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. |
