Vivienne Cox Profile :
Exec. VP, CEO - Alternative Energy - BP PLC

Vivienne Cox Biography :

Vivienne is Executive Vice President for Gas Power & Renewables and Integrated Supply & Trading. She is also a member of the BP Group Chief Executives.

Education: Vivienne gained a Bachelors degree and Masters in Chemistry from Oxford university and an MBA at INSEAD Fontainebleau France.

Career: Vivienne joined BP Chemicals in a commercial role. In 1985 Vivienne moved to BP Exploration and worked on gas projects learning about Finance Economics and the negotiation of long term contracts.

In 1987 her move to BP Finance coincided with the sale by the UK Government of its remaining shares in BP and Vivienne worked on a small team masterminding that sale.

After a period in the Finance dealing room she went to France to do an MBA at INSEAD. Returning to BP in 1990 she set up the commodity derivatives group within oil trading. In 1993 she then took over responsibility for BP’s shareholding in a refinery in Rotterdam and all the associated supply and trading activities. As the organisation changed that role evolved so that by the time Vivienne moved on she was responsible for all the supply of crude oil and sale of products from the BP European refining system.

In 1996 Vivienne moved out to Vienna to manage the development of new business in central and eastern Europe. She built BP’s downstream position in Russia in Poland Czech Republic Hungary and the Ukraine. In 1998 she became the CEO of Air BP BP’s global aircraft refuelling business. Air BP turnover is around $4bn a year and the company has more than 1000 employees worldwide.

After Air BP Vivienne took over a portfolio of businesses and functional activities within BP Oil as part of the executive committee. BP Oil makes around $3bn a year in profit and Vivienne’s portfolio includes supply and trading logistics shipping and pipelines as well as e-commerce and procurement.

In 2001 all BP’s trading activities in Oil Gas Chemicals and Finance were brought together in a single organisation called IST (Integrated Supply & Trading). Vivienne led that organisation developing the business model and ensuring that the appropriate controls systems and processes were in place. During the first three years the organisation trebled its contribution to BP; and is now seen as a source of competitive distinction for BP.

Since mid 2004 Vivienne has been an Executive Vice President retaining the responsibility for IST but adding the Gas Power & Renewables (GP&R) business to her portfolio.

During 2005 a new organisation called Alternative Energy was created within GP&R. This business will invest $8bn over the next 10 years to develop low carbon power sources.
