Virginia chairs the firm’s White Collar Defense and Investigations practice. She represents and counsels publicly and privately held corporations, public bodies, boards, committees and individuals in government and internal investigations and in criminal and civil regulatory prosecutions and compliance reviews. A former Assistant United States Attorney for the Department of Justice (Northern District of Ohio), Virginia leads a multi-disciplinary team in advising and defending clients in regulated environments -- whether in securities and capital markets, accounting, health care, education, government contracts, environmental, Food and Drug regulation or antitrust. Each member of the White Collar practice lends extensive and varied regulatory experience to focus on the overall well-being of the client. In her role with the DOJ, Virginia prosecuted white collar crimes and served as the district’s health care In her role with the DOJ, Virginia prosecuted white collar crimes and served as the district's health care fraud coordinator. Her extensive trial work included the country’s first conviction and life sentence for health care fraud resulting in death. Virginia pioneered the use of statistical sampling in criminal cases. In the district’s Affirmative Civil Enforcement (ACE) unit, she litigated civil qui tam actions under the False Claims Act. Virginia has received awards and citations from DOJ, FBI, the Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) and the National Health Care Anti-fraud Association (NHCAA), including the NHCAA’s Investigation of the Year Award in 2006. Virginia is a national instructor and speaker to federal and state law enforcement agencies including FBI, HHS, state Attorneys General and the NHCAA. She serves on the board of directors of the Federal Bar Association's Northern District of Ohio Chapter and on the Ohio State Bar Association's Criminal Justice Committee. She is a member of the American Bar Association and its Criminal Justice section. She is a member of the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. Virginia serves as president of the board of trustees of Just Like Us, a community re-entry program for criminal offenders and as a director for the Fairmount Center for the Arts. Prior to working for DOJ, Virginia spent five years with the Federal Trade Commission in Cleveland. As lead plaintiff’s counsel in nationwide civil consumer protection suits challenging deceptive trade practices, she recovered millions of dollars on behalf of injured consumers. She also conducted antitrust merger and non-merger investigations. The first eight years of her legal career were spent in private practice; prior to becoming an attorney she worked as a journalist. Virginia joined Calfee as a partner in 2006. |
