Victor F. Ganzi is president and chief executive officer of Hearst Corporation, one of the nation’s largest diversified communications companies. Ganzi assumed this post on June 1, 2002. He is also a director of Hearst Corporation and a testamentary trustee of the trust established under the Will of William Randolph Hearst.
Ganzi began his career at Hearst in 1990 as general counsel and vice president. In 1992, he was appointed chief financial and legal officer and elected senior vice president. He took on the responsibilities of operating the Hearst Books/Business Publishing Group in 1995 and held that post, as well as his other responsibilities, until the group was reorganized as Hearst Business Media in August 1999. He was elected executive vice president in 1997 and named chief operating officer in 1998.
Prior to joining Hearst, Ganzi was the managing partner at Rogers & Wells (now Clifford Chance), one of the world’s largest international law firms, where he was responsible for day-to-day operations and supervised the firm’s attorneys and its support personnel. Ganzi also practiced as a certified public accountant in taxation at a Big Four accounting firm in Denver. The relationship between Hearst and Ganzi began in 1970 when the Company became a client of Rogers & Wells and Ganzi, then a young tax associate, was assigned to the account. Over the next 20 years, Ganzi had significant involvement in Hearst’s recapitalization and all of its many acquisitions.
Ganzi, a native of New York, graduated summa cum laude from Fordham University in 1968. He received a J.D. degree from Harvard Law School in 1971 and an L.L.M. in taxation from New York University in 1981.
Ganzi is a director of Hearst-Argyle Television, Inc. and serves as that company’s non-executive chairman. He also sits on the boards of The Associated Press, ESPN, the PGA Tour, Gentiva Health Services, Inc., Wyeth, and Palm Management Corporation, the entity that operates the various Palm Restaurants throughout the United States and has been 50%-owned by his family for the past 79 years. He also serves as co-chair of the Partnership for New York City, along with Charles Prince, chairman and CEO of Citigroup. The Partnership is a network of business leaders dedicated to enhancing the economy of the five boroughs of New York City and maintaining the city's position as the global center of commerce, culture and innovation.
Ganzi is involved in various civic and charitable activities in New York City and serves on a number of not-for-profit boards, including both of the Hearst Foundations. |
