Since 1977, Tyler’s practice has focused on the transactional, finance and securities law aspects of corporate, partnership, business, real estate and commercial matters. Tyler became of counsel to the firm in 2005 and, in addition to advising both family controlled and public clients, previously served in senior leadership positions in his prior law firms.
Tyler has lectured frequently on the legal and tax aspects of business and personal planning and financing of business and real estate transactions; served as panel moderator and panelist for courses given under the auspices of The Education Committee of the Business Law Section of the State Bar of California (Documenting the Deal 1996), National Business Institute (Considerations in Buying or Selling a Business in California 1994), University of California’s Continuing Education Of The Bar (Fundamentals of Organizing and Advising California Businesses [1984, 1985 and 1986], Tax Planning for Families and Family Businesses [1985] and Organizing & Counseling Closely Held Corporations [1990, 1992 and 1994]) and Infocast (Residential Real Estate Construction Lending [1989]); and co-authored Covenants Not to Compete: An Objective Approach to Valuation, The Journal of Real Estate Taxation, Winter 1986. In addition, Tyler has served as an arbitrator for the New York Stock Exchange.
Among his community activities, Tyler served as a Commissioner on the San Diego Housing Commission from 2002-2005. He also served as the 1998 chair of the San Diego Business Roundtable for Education and previously served as chair of the Roundtable’s standing or ad hoc committees on Optimizing Management & Resource Utilization (1996-1997), the Superintendent Profile & Selection Criteria (1997), Standards, Measurements and Accountability (1999-2000) and the Blueprint for Student Success in a Standards Based System (2000). He currently serves as the Chair of the Business Roundtable for Education Foundation. In 2000, Tyler was appointed as a director of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce and served as chair of its Education Committee. Tyler also served on the San Diego City Schools Academic Achievement Council. In 2004, he was appointed by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction as an initial member of the California Longitudinal Pupil Achievement Data System (CALPADS) Advisory Board. Tyler is a member of the Rotary Club of San Diego (Club 33) holding the classification of Corporate Law.
A third generation San Diegan, Tyler graduated from Stanford University in 1973 with distinction and departmental honors in political science. Following Stanford, Tyler was awarded a California State Assembly Fellowship and served as the legislative aide to the Assembly Elections and Reapportionment Committee in Sacramento. Thereafter, Tyler attended the University of California, Hastings College of Law and graduated in 1977. |
