Trip Hawkins Biography :

Trip Hawkins has over twenty-six years of consumer technology experience and is considered one of the "founding fathers" of the personal computers and the video game industries. He is an inventor who founded Electronic Arts and authored two patents. Key Accomplishments and Experience Founder of Electronic Arts (ERTS), 1982-1991 In 1982, Trip founded Electronic Arts. He was responsible for building Electronic Arts, its management team, and was personally involved in all aspect of strategic planning and product development. He served as the company’s Chief Executive Officer from its inception until September 1991 and remained as Chairman of the Board until October 1994. Trip Hawkins brought Electronic Arts from a little gaming software company into an industry leader. He essentially defined and set the business model and standards for the computer game industry. One of his many personal creative highlights included the design, creation and marketing of the John Madden Football game which brought about the creation of EA Sports. Electronic Arts went public in 1989. Founder of 3DO (THDO), 1981-2003 After retiring from executive responsibilities at Electronic Arts, Trip started a new company, 3DO, a hardware licensing company. The company too had a similar success pattern and went IPO in 1993. 3DO was given a lot of credit for pioneering good ideas in the game industry but eventually lost the hardware battle to giant Sony Corp. While profitable, 3DO’s hardware business could not gain market share and was later sold to Samsung and Matsushita for $35M in cash and stock. Essentially, 3DO became a game software startup. From 1997 to 1999, 3DO was the fastest-growing public game software company. In March 2000, for the fiscal year, the company generated approximately $120M in revenues. Thereafter, unforeseeable events a weakening global economy, the U.S. stock market collapse and the 9-11 terrorist attack, combined with the transition of the game platform technology affected operations and curbed access to capital, requiring 3DO be sold in 2003. Director of Marketing (AAPL), 1978-1982 Prior to starting Electronic Arts, Trip was hired as the first Director of Marketing at Apple Computer to focus on the business and office market for personal computers. He was responsible for developing and implementing plans for Apple's entry into the business/corporate computing market. Working almost exclusively for the founders, Trip was well involved with the company’s strategic planning and assisted in the designs of Apple’s many principle features and key standards. Other Notables: Trip Hawkins has: · Served as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of several public companies for over 20 years. · Played a key role in 14 startups, including 7 overseas subsidiaries, and 3 that had market capitalization of more than $1 billion and 2 that became Fortune 500 companies (Apple and Electronic Arts). · Significant capital-raising experience with every kind of funding sources (VC, private, public, strategic). · Experience and great success in training and developing executives for many organizations. · Been credited for the design of many popular software/computer games, including John Madden Football.
