Tony Nathan Biography :

Tony Nathan joined the Ravens as the team's running backs coach in 2006, after 3 years coaching the RBs at Florida International University...Nathan, who was honored as a Senior Bowl Hall of Famer in 2006, is a former NFL RB (Miami) who has now coached for 18 years, including 14 with the Dolphins and Bucs.

OVERVIEW: An experienced NFL and collegiate coach, Nathan spent 3 years developing the Florida International University run game as its RBs coach...As the Tampa Bay Bucanneers' RBs coach (1996-2001), Nathan coached Pro Bowlers RB Warrick Dunn and FB Mike Alstott to pace the Bucs' rushing attack...Spent 8 years as a Miami Dolphins coach, after retiring from his 9-year playing career in Miami...Played alongside Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome for the 1978 University of Alabama National Championship team.

2003-2005: (with Florida International University) 2005: Coached a FIU rushing offense that gained over 1,500 gross rushing yards. 2004: Under Nathan's guidance, FIU's RB Rashod Smith became the 1st running back in Golden Panthers history to rush for over 1,000 yards when he totaled 1,133 rushing yards on 230 carries and scored 12 TDs...2 0 0 3 : Hired by Don Strock as FIU's RBs coach.

1996-2001: (with Tampa Bay) Coached NFL Pro Bowlers RB Warrick Dunn and FB Mike Alstott as Tampa's RBs coach...Alstott made the Pro Bowl in each of Nathan's last 5 years as his coach.

2000: The Alstott-Dunn tandem combined for nearly 1,600 rushing yards en route to 2 Pro Bowl selections. 1999: Alstott totaled a career-high 949 rushing yards. 1998: Tampa Bay's rushing offense finished 4th in the NFL (2,148 yards/134.3 ypg). 1997: Alstott and Dunn both earned Pro Bowl berths...Dunn led the Bucs in both rushing and receiving yards in his rookie year. 1996: Joined the Tampa Bay coaching staff.

1988-95: (with Miami) 1994-95: Rookie free agent RB Bernie Parmalee led Miami in rushing yards for 2 straight years (868 in '94 and 878 in '95)...RB Terry Kirby led Miami again in '95 with 66 receptions. 1993: Coached Pro Bowl FB Keith Byars and Kirby (a rookie) who combined for an NFL backfield-best 136 receptions...Kirby led all Dolphins with 75 catches in 1993...Elevated to offensive backs coach prior to the season. 1988-92: After retiring from a 9-year NFL career, Nathan was hired by Don Shula as a coaches' assistant.

NFL PLAYER: 1979-87: (with Miami) Played 9 solid seasons as a RB for the Miami Dolphins...Ranks high on a number of all-time team lists: 5th in rushing yardage (3,543), 6th in rushing attempts (732) and 5th in receptions (383). 1984: Played in Super Bowl XIX vs. San Francisco and rushed 5 times for 18 yards. 1982: Participated in 1 of the NFL's most amazing plays in one of its greatest games, a 41-38 OT playoff loss to San Diego...Nathan ran 25 yards for a TD following a lateral from WR Duriel Harris on the famous "hook and lateral" play (WR receives ball and pitches to RB who is running behind WR)...Suited up in Super Bowl XVII vs. Washington, rushing 7 times for 26 yards. 1981: Nathan was named the Dolphins' MVP after leading the team with a career-high 782 rushing yards...His 5.3 yards per carry average was tops in the NFL. 1979: Was originally drafted in the 3rd round (61st overall) by the Dolphins.

PERSONAL: Nathan won a NCAA national championship in 1978 at Alabama as its star RB alongside Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome, who played WR...Rushed for 1,997 yards on 310 carries and 29 TDs in his Crimson Tide career...His 127 yards rushing vs. Penn State in the Sugar Bowl helped clinch the title for Alabama...Was a 4-sport star (football, basketball, baseball and track) at Woodlawn (Birmingham, AL) HS...Tony and his wife, Johnnie, have 3 daughters: Nichole, Natalie and Nadia.
