Tom Monteverde practices in all areas of civil litigation, and among other things hasrepresented (as plaintiffs and defendants) individuals, liability insurers, and corporate clients in product liability and surety cases; businesses, banks, insurance companies, and bank and insurance holding companies in regulatory, anti-takeover, and loan enforcement litigation; and construction and bonding companies in construction related litigation.
Tom has tried antitrust cases to verdicts for both plaintiffs and defendants and individual and class action litigations under federal and state securities laws. He has represented a major hazardous waste processor in all types of regulatory and claim proceedings, the region's largest commercial and residential real estate brokerage firm, the largest locally based motor carrier, and a major manufacturer of general aviation aircraft in personal injury and death cases.
Tom is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and The Dickinson School of Law. Prior to joining Monteverde McAlee & Hurd in 1976, he was an associate for four years in a Pittsburgh law firm specializing in insurance and bonding defense work; an associate and then a principal litigation partner for 15 years in a major Philadelphia law firm (Schnader, Harrison, Segal & Lewis); and one of four principals for six years in a medium size Philadelphia law firm. Tom founded Monteverde, McAlee & Hurd in 1976.
Tom is a member of the bars of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. He is also admitted to the following federal courts: Western and Eastern Districts of Pennsylvania, Third Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court. Tom is also a member of the American Bar Association and Pennsylvania Bar Association, Pennsylvania Trial Lawyers Association and Philadelphia Trial Lawyers Association.
Tom co-founded The Dickinson Forum which, for more than 20 years, conducted annual seminars for lawyers practicing individually or in smaller law firms on current developments in the law. He has also lectured on various matters of civil practice before the Pennsylvania Bar Association, Pennsylvania Trial Lawyers, Philadelphia Trial Lawyers and the American Arbitration Association.
Tom was a Trustee of the Dickinson School of Law for 25 years (from 1976 - 2001) and then a member of the Board of Governors of the Dickinson School of Law of Pennsylvania State University after that. He also received the Outstanding Alumnus Award from the Dickinson School of Law in 1980 for his services as an outstanding trial lawyer and leadership in continuing legal education and leader in its continuing legal education program.
Tom, and two other members of The Lw School's Board of Governors, instituted litigation against Penn State and the Board of Governors to oppose the terms on which Penn State sought to transfer the (since 1828) site of the Law School from historic Carlisle to State College, Pennsylvania, after a very small majority of the Law School's Board of Governors had approved Penn State's proposal. This year, in a Penn State Alumni publication, Penn State credited Tom Monteverde for negotiating a resolution of that litigation which, with the assistance of Pennsylvania's Governor, Edward Rendell, substantially improved, as to both duration and scope, Penn State's commitment to the Law School's Carlisle campus. |
