Timothy R. Franson, M.D., was named vice president, global regulatory affairs in August 2003. He also was named to the senior management council and the Lilly Research Laboratories (LRL) policy committee. Previously, Franson had been vice president of U.S. clinical research and regulatory affairs for Lilly Research Laboratories, a division of Eli Lilly and Company.
Born in Galesburg, Ill., Franson received a bachelor of science degree in pharmacy from Drake University in 1974. The University of Illinois College of Medicine awarded him a doctor of medicine degree in 1978. He served his internship and residency at the University of Iowa Hospital and a fellowship in infectious diseases at the Medical College of Wisconsin, where he was a full-time faculty member for three years prior to joining Lilly in 1986 as an associate clinical investigator.
Franson was named director of the chemotherapy division of Lilly Research Laboratories in 1988 and group medical director for Europe, located at Erl Wood, near London, England, in 1991. In 1993, he was executive director of health economics research and decision sciences. He was named executive director of North America regulatory affairs in 1994. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine and the Subspecialty Board of Infectious Diseases and is licensed in the states of Wisconsin and Indiana. He is also an assistant professor of medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine and adjunct associate professor of pharmaceutical sciences at Butler University College of Pharmacy and Health Services.
Franson is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) and a member of the American Federation for Clinical Research and the American Society for Microbiology. Franson serves as chair of the Clinical Steering Committee and a member of the Regulatory Affairs Coordinating Committee of the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers’ Association (PhRMA) and previously represented the industry on the European working party for antimicrobial trial guidelines and the FDA/IDSA antimicrobial trial guidelines revision project. He also serves on the editorial advisory board for FDA Advertising & Promotional Manual and is a member of the board of trustees for Xavier University of Louisiana.
Franson serves on the board of directors for the Villages of Indiana and the Indiana State Museum Foundation. He has also served as chair of the Educational Master Plan Committee and on the superintendent's advisory council for the Eagle-Union School Corporation (Zionsville, Ind.,) and on a long-range planning committee for the Drake University College of Pharmacy. |
