Timothy J. Waters is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery based in the Firm's Washington, D.C. office. He is the co-partner-in-charge of the Regulations and Government Affairs Group. Tim is also a member of the Antitrust & Competition Practice Group as well as the Firm's Management Committee.
Tim focuses his practice on antitrust and trade regulation. He works extensively with investment bankers, corporations and trade and professional associations. In conjunction with his practice, he has reviewed over 1,500 mergers and acquisitions for investment banking and corporate clients, and has tried antitrust cases in U.S. District Courts and argued cases before U.S. Courts of Appeals.
Tim is a co-editor of the book Antitrust & Trade Associations: How Trade Regulation Laws Apply to Trade and Professional Associations (American Bar Association 1996) and a contributing author of the text Economic & Antitrust Policy (Quorum Books, 1989). He has written numerous articles for various trade association publications, including Associations and the Law, published by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. In addition to his writing, Tim has been a regular participant in antitrust seminars sponsored by Bar Associations, and various trade and professional associations. He has been a guest lecturer on antitrust issues at the law schools of Georgetown University, George Washington University, The American University and Saint Louis University.
Tim has served as co-chair of the Trade Association Committee and vice-chair of the Specialization Committee of the American Bar Association Section of Antitrust Law. Tim was assistant to the chairman of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and assistant to the director of the Bureau of Competition of the FTC in 1971 and 1972. He also served on the Steering Committee of the Antitrust and Consumer Protection Division of the District of Columbia Bar Association. Tim served nine years as a member of the Board of Trustees for the University of San Francisco, his undergraduate Alma Mater. He currently serves on the Advisory Board to the Dean of the School of Law at George Washington University.
Tim is a member of the bars of the Commonwealth of Virginia, the District of Columbia, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, Third, Fourth and Ninth Circuits and the Supreme Court of the United States.
