Thurgood Marshall, Jr., an attorney in Washington, D.C. and former member of the White House senior staff in the Clinton Administration, was appointed a Governor of the U.S. Postal Service by President George W. Bush on December 15, 2006, for a term that expires December 8, 2011. He serves as a member of the Board's Audit and Finance Committee and the Capital Projects Committee.

Governor Marshall is a partner at Bingham McCutchen and a principal with the Bingham Consulting Group. He has developed legislative and regulatory strategies for clients involved in corporate mergers, professional and amateur sports, commercial aviation, utility and banking regulation, pharmaceuticals, and legal process reforms.

Previously, Marshall served President Clinton as Assistant to the President and Cabinet Secretary from 1997 to 2001. In that position, he was the primary liaison between the President and the Executive Branch agencies. He was a member of the President's Management Council, served as a senior member of the Continuity in Government team and directed the White House response to natural disasters and transportation emergencies. Marshall also served as vice chair of the White House Olympic Task Force, coordinating the involvement of two dozen federal agencies in preparation for the 2002 Salt Lake Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Prior to his appointment as Cabinet Secretary, Marshall was Director of Legislative Affairs and Deputy Counsel for Vice President Al Gore and was a member of the Congressional leadership staff. He has held counsel positions with the Senate Judiciary Committee and the Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, as well as the Governmental Affairs Committee. On Capitol Hill, he worked extensively on a wide range of legislative initiatives including federal employee retirement and health benefits.

Marshall, the son of former Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, began his legal career as a law clerk to U.S. District Judge Barrington D. Parker of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. He received a BA and JD from the University of Virginia and he serves on the boards of a publicly traded company and several nonprofit entities, including the Ford Foundation. Marshall lives in Virginia with his two teenage sons, Will and Patrick.
