Thomas Sterling Biography :

A native of Union City Tenn. Mr. Sterling graduated from Vanderbilt University with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering. He earned his law degree from Samford University's Cumberland School of Law in Birmingham Ala. and has been admitted to the bar in Alabama and Pennsylvania.

He began his career with U. S. Steel in 1969 at Fairfield (Ala.) Works as a management trainee. He advanced through positions in the operating personnel services and commercial departments before he was transferred to Pittsburgh headquarters in 1975 as assistant manager-equal employment opportunity in the employee relations department.

Mr. Sterling progressed through various employee relations positions in Pittsburgh before he became vice president-labor relations steel and related resources for the former U. S. Steel Group of USX Corporation in 1984. In 1986 he became vice president-employee relations with responsibility for all human resources labor relations productivity improvement and health and safety matters for the U. S. Steel Group. In 1996 he assumed additional responsibility for employee benefits.

Additionally Mr. Sterling held oversight responsibilities for several of U. S. Steel’s joint venture operations with foreign steel companies including USS-POSCO Industries and PRO-TEC Coating Company.

In 2000 Mr. Sterling was elected president of Transtar Inc. now a wholly owned subsidiary of

U. S. Steel which owns the following operating companies: Birmingham Southern Railroad; Elgin Joliet and Eastern Railway; The Lake Terminal Railroad; McKeesport Connecting Railroad; Union Railroad; and Warrior & Gulf Navigation. He served in that position until 2003 when he was elected to the position of senior vice president-human resources. In 2004 he was named senior vice president-human resources & business services when he assumed oversight of the internal organization that manages administrative and information technology services company-wide. He was appointed to his current position in February 2007 adding Public Affairs and certain other administrative functions to his area of responsibility.

Mr. Sterling is chairman of the Board of Directors of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Braddock and a member of the Board of Directors at UPMC McKeesport and the Heritage Health Foundation. He serves as president of the Greater Pittsburgh Council of the Boy Scouts of America as well as a member of its Board of Directors. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of Robert Morris University and currently represents U. S. Steel on the Board of Directors of Maglev Inc. a Pittsburgh-based company promoting the development of magnetically levitated transportation systems in the United States with an initial line to be constructed in the Pittsburgh area.
