Thomas W. Rabaut is a Senior Advisor to the Aerospace, Defense and Business/Government Services Group. In that capacity, he advises Carlyle on investments in these sectors, helps improve portfolio company operations and mentors portfolio company management teams. He is based in Washington, DC.
Mr. Rabaut served as President and CEO of one of Carlyle’s most successful investments -- the 1997 investment in United Defense. During his tenure at United Defense, he led the evolution of the company from a limited partnership through the formation of a stand-alone private enterprise to a NYSE publicly-traded company and the ultimate sale to BAE Systems. During this period, the enterprise grew from $900 million in sales to $2.3 billion and was placed in the top industry quartile for profitability. Debt was paid off significantly ahead of schedule and Mr. Rabaut was responsible for executing several highly successful acquisitions including Bofors Defence (Sweden) and United States Marine Repair. After the sale of United Defense to BAE in June 2005, he served as President of the Land and Armaments Operating Group of BAE Systems where he oversaw 11,000 employees in 13 locations and was responsible for $3.7 billion in sales.
Prior to his tenure at United Defense, he served 17 years in various roles at FMC where he ultimately became Vice President and General Manager of FMC’s Defense Systems Group. He also served five years in the United States Army.
Mr. Rabaut earned his B.S. at the United State Military Academy at West Point and his M.B.A. from Harvard University.
He is a member of the Aerospace Industries Association, the Association of the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, the Council of Trustees-Association of the United States Army, the Navy League of the United States, the National Guard Association of the United States, the U. S. Army Ordnance Corps Association, the National Infantryman's Association and the Naval Surface Warfare Association.
Mr. Rabaut served as Chairman of Bofors Defence AB, Hagglunds AB and as a member of the board of FNSS a Turkish joint venture company with NUROL. He currently serves on the boards of CYTEC Industries Inc. and Burdeshaw Associates, Ltd. |
