Tom Crowley Jr., Chairman, President and CEO of Crowley Maritime Corporation got his start in the family business at an early age. Crowley was 16 and still in high school when he first started working as a ticket collector for the company's San Francisco passenger service, the Red and White Fleet. He performed in a number of different field jobs throughout the Crowley organization up until the time he graduated from the University of Washington with a business degree in finance and began working his way through Crowley’s management training program. He learned a lot about the company and the maritime business and about the importance of surrounding yourself with knowledgeable, skilled people. Crowley was intent on building a career at the company and hoped to one day succeed his father. He didn’t expect that to happen until later in life. As events unfolded, Tom Crowley Sr. passed away in 1994, and Crowley Jr. became CEO at the age of 27. He was well prepared. During the two years prior to his father's death, Crowley headed up the Red and White Fleet, which allowed him to gain important management experience and profit and loss responsibilities for the business enterprise. He later came to work side by side with his father at corporate headquarters in San FranciscoOakland. He spent as much time as he could with his father and attended weekly corporate meetings and board of director meetings, learning in depth about the overall operations of the company. |
