Prior to founding Providence Capital, LLC in May of 2001, Tom previously served as a fund manager for EBF & Associates (1995 to 2001). He focused on investing in structurally and financially distressed companies in both the public and private markets as well as special situations including (i) the acquisition of a mortgage bank from the RTC for $8.5 million; (ii) investing more than $125MM in a variety of tender offers on public limited partnerships and institutional co-mingled funds (iii) opportunistic real estate investments including interests in the Westin St Francis in San Francisco, California, and the Westin Michigan Avenue, Chicago, Illinois; (iv) land entitlement, improvement and construction of more than 2,500 acres and 1000 residential units and commercial sites in Southern California; (v) the $85 million redevelopment of the Naval Training Center in San Diego, California (vi); (vii) managing out of an existing portfolio of more than $10 million of sub-prime automobile loans and credit card receivables; (viii) legal/activist opportunities such as serving on creditor committees and acquiring securities to control or influence litigation and receive the economic benefit of the associated legal claims; (ix) sourced and purchased trade claims. Tom also served as Associate General Counsel and Special Projects Manager for CDI Corp (1992 to 1995). Aside from his legal responsibilities, he (i) budgeted and managed the construction of sophisticated out patient diagnostic centers in Minnesota, Florida and Wisconsin; and (ii) rolled up a series of investment partnerships to simplify the corporate structure. Tom also served as an Associate in the law firm of William Brinks Olds Hofer Gilson & Leone (1989 to 1992). He worked as an intellectual property attorney specializing in licensing, prosecution and litigation for clients including United Airlines Inc., Kimberly-Clark Corp, Tyson Foods Inc., FMC Corp, The Coca Cola Company, General Mills Inc., Harvard University, William Wrigley Jr. Co., Sears, Roebuck & Co., Bayer A.G., First Brands Corp, and Mrs. Fields Inc. Tom received: a Juris Doctorate degree from Wake Forest University Law School (1986 ñ 198), where he was a Teaching Assistant for the senior finance professor and past Dean of the Babcock Graduate School of Management; a B.A. in Political Science from Wheaton College (1983-1986), where he was on the 1984 NCAA Division III National Championship soccer team and received the Coaches Award for personal character. Tom also attended the United States Air Force Academy (1982). Tom is currently serving a three year term on the Board of Visitors for Wheaton College; is an officer of the Aslan Foundation; and a past board member of Global Leadership International. Tom is 41 years old, has been married for 19 years, and has one son and one daughter. |
