Terry Hopwood was appointed senior vice president, general counsel in January 2002. Terry took on the role of general counsel and secretary to Suncor’s board of directors in 1995. Prior to holding these positions, he was Suncor’s vice president of finance and administration for Exploration and Production.
Since joining Suncor in 1988 as senior counsel, Terry has held a series of senior positions in the legal, administration and acquisition areas of the former Exploration and Production business. In his current position, Terry is responsible for all legal matters across the corporation.
Before he began working for Suncor, Terry was the chairman and founder of Triple Crown Resources, a junior capital pool corporation listed on the Alberta Stock Exchange. Prior to that, he handled the legal and business dealings for D.M. Wolcott & Associates, a privately held diversified energy corporation, and served as vice president of Morgan Hydrocarbons Inc, a publicly traded entity. He was also a member of the law firm Bennett Jones for two years, with a specialized practice in the areas of corporate, commercial and securities law.
In January 2002, Terry became a member of the board of directors for the Calgary Chamber of Commerce. He served as chair of the Chamber during 2005. Since September 2000, he has been a member of the board of directors of the Alberta Adolescent Recovery Centre and has also served on the cabinet of the United Way.
Terry attended Queen’s University for his bachelor of arts degree and McGill University for his first year of law, then transferred to the University of Manitoba where he received a bachelor of law degree. He moved to Calgary in 1980.
Terry and his wife have one daughter.
