Susan Villani is currently the Medical Director of School Programs at the Kennedy Krieger Institute. She is also an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.
Biographical Sketch:
Dr. Villani received her bachelors degree from Emory University in 1973 and continued her education at West Virginia University Medical School, receiving her M.D. in 1977. Dr. Villani completed her residency at University of Kentucky Medical Center. In 1999, after over 20 years of work at different facilities around the country, she became the Medical Director for the Kennedy Krieger School Programs.
Dr. Villani is an active member of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry having held a variety of positions within the organization over the past decade. Her primary focus over the course of her career has been on the development of systems of care for severely emotionally disturbed youth.
Since 1998 she has also been involved with a child abuse prevention project in Eastern Europe funded by the Children’s Mental Health Alliance Foundation of New York and the Soros Foundation. A married, mother of two teenage children, Dr. Villani is currently working on a book on parenting in the Information Age.
Research Summary:
Seeking to combine her scientific and clinical knowledge of emotional disturbance with an interest in the study of the effects of today’s culture on youth, Dr. Villani has researched and published on the topic of the impact of the media on children and adolescents, and is widely considered an authority in this area. |
