Susan Peters Schaefer is a partner in the the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP based in the Firm's Chicago office. She is a member of the Employee Benefits Department, where she focuses her practice on tax-qualified retirement plans, with a particular emphasis on employee stock ownership plans (ESOPs), and executive deferred compensation plans. She has advised clients on a wide range of matters which affect employee benefit plans, such as mergers and acquisitions, fiduciary responsibility issues, ERISA controversies and prohibited transactions. She has represented clients before the IRS and the Department of Labor.
She also has significant experience representing corporations, individuals and fiduciaries in a variety of other corporate transactions. Susan is often involved with negotiation of employment and noncompete agreements, the development of succession plans and the implementation of executive compensation plans.
Susan's clients include global manufacturing companies, service companies, small businesses, fiduciaries and financial institutions. She is active with The ESOP Association, service as a member of the legislative and Regulatory Committee. She is a co-author of the Legal Update articles in The ESOP Association's monthly newsletter. She speaks frequently before employer and professional groups on a variety of ESOP, fiduciary and employee benefit issues.
Susan is admitted to the Illinois bar.
