Dr. Johnson, the company founder, has conducted basic and applied research for various government sponsors. Dr. Johnson’s work has included: (1) ground-penetrating radar; (2) sonar; (3) geo-physical applications of low-frequency electromagnetic fields and currents; and (4) breast cancer detection using ultrasound tomographic concepts. The multi-modality breast cancer scanner product being developed and marketed by TMS is an outgrowth of Dr. Johnson’s multidisciplinary research and development effort. Dr. Johnson is listed as an inventor on 13 U.S. patents in the fields of ultrasound imaging, electromagnetic imaging, inverse scattering, x-ray imaging, distillation columns, and solar energy. He is a University of Utah faculty member in the Bioengineering, Radiology, and Electrical Engineering departments. He is the principal investigator on many of the NIH Phase I and II SBIR grants obtained by TMS.

Dr. Johnson received his doctorate in physics from Stanford University with a specialty in optical spectroscopy. His advisor at Stanford, A. L. Schawlow, was a Nobel laureate in physics for inventing the laser and for leadership in spectroscopy. Following graduate school, Dr. Johnson worked in the Biophysics Department at Mayo Clinic on x-ray CT, Doppler flow ultrasound and ultrasound tomography. He then came to the Bioengineering Department at the University of Utah, where he established the Center for Inverse Problems, Imaging, and Tomography (CIPIT).
