Steven H. Nelson serves as president of Health Net of the Northeast, Inc., a subsidiary of Health Net, Inc. Health Net is among the nation’s largest publicly traded managed health care companies.
Mr. Nelson was appointed president in January 2005. In June 2004, he assumed the role of chief operating officer for the Eastern Region of Health Net, Inc. That position was created to strengthen Health Net’s presence in the Northeast market, align business operations, and focus on improved performance. Prior to this, he led the national Senior Products Division, which includes Health Net's Medicare programs.
Mr. Nelson’s health care career encompasses 15 years of executive and management-level service. Before joining Health Net in 2003, he was chief operating officer and vice president of Network Management of United Health Care’s Arizona market. Prior to that, Mr. Nelson spent 10 years with the Henry Ford Health System. During his time with the Ford System, he held executive positions in its 900-bed tertiary teaching hospital, the corporate office, the 1,000-physician multi-specialty academic group practice, and HAP the system's 600,000 member health plan.
Mr. Nelson holds dual master’s degrees from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor one in health services administration and another in business administration, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology from Portland State University.

The company’s health plans and government contracts subsidiaries provide health benefits to more than 6 million individuals across the country through group, individual, Medicare, Medicaid and TRICARE and Veterans Affairs programs. Health Net’s behavioral health subsidiary, MHN, provides mental health benefits to approximately 7 million individuals in all 50 states. The company’s subsidiaries also offer managed health care products related to prescription drugs, and offer managed health care product coordination for multi-region employers and administrative services for medical groups and self-funded benefits programs. |
