Steve Weeks, who enters his fifth season and sixth year with the Atlanta Thrashers, has more than 25 years of NHL experience as a player, coach and scout. In addition to his primary responsibilities as an assistant coach, Weeks serves as a goaltending specialist for the club.
Prior to joining the Thrashers on June 26, 2001, Weeks spent eight seasons with the Carolina Hurricanes (previously the Hartford Whalers) from 1993-2001, most recently as a goaltending coach and pro scout.
During Weeks' eight-year tenure with Carolina, goaltending improved significantly with the team averaging 32 wins along with a 2.85 GAA and a .901 save percentage. A native of Scarborough, Ontario, Weeks joined the Whalers in February 1993 as goaltending consultant. He served as an assistant coach for Hartford in 1996-97 and was named goaltender coach/pro scout after the franchise moved to Carolina prior to the 1997-98 season.
Weeks played 13 seasons in the NHL for the New York Rangers (1980-84), Hartford (1984-88), Vancouver Canucks (1988-91), New York Islanders (1991-92), Los Angeles Kings (1992) and Ottawa Senators (1992-93). He spent his most notable time between the pipes in Hartford, where he had a 3.68 goals-against average with four shutouts in 94 games and a 42-42-6 record. He also appeared in four playoff games and had a 2.64 average with a win and two losses. His playoff win was a memorable 2-1 overtime victory again Montreal in game four of the Adams Division Finals in 1986. During his NHL career, Weeks compiled a 3.73 average with five shutouts and a 112-119-33 record.
