Steve Kim's Biography :

Steve Kim Vice President As a Vice President in our Los Angeles office, Mr. Kim is responsible for leading and conducting digital forensic and cyber-crime investigations, electronic discovery matters, critical infrastructure protection projects, and data breach response efforts. Mr. Kim also oversees complex white collar investigations involving online fraud, forgery of email and documents, identity theft, employee misconduct, and the theft of trade secrets for Fortune 500 companies and major law firms. Prior to joining Stroz Friedberg, Mr. Kim was an Assistant United States Attorney in the Cyber and Intellectual Property Crimes Section of the U.S. Attorney s Office for the Central District of California, where he managed and prosecuted cases involving network intrusions, theft of personal identifying information, corporate proprietary data breaches, and intellectual property violations. As a federal prosecutor, Mr. Kim gained deep experience in traditional and cyber investigative techniques, advised fellow prosecutors and federal agents in computer seizure-and-search protocols, and was responsible for enforcing a wide range of federal laws, including the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, the Economic Espionage Act, and the Electronic Communications Privacy Act. Some of Mr. Kim s notable cases include: the indictment of a major identity thief in one of the earliest Los Angeles prosecutions under the federal Aggravated Identity Theft statute; the investigation and successful prosecution of an employee hack back case; and the conviction of a credit card fraudster who stole, monitored, and catalogued personal identifying information from hundreds of victims through computer and Internet abuse. Mr. Kim also served on the Los Angeles Electronic Crimes Task Force; participated in the Computer Forensics and Intrusions Working Group (an inter-agency cyber-crime response team); and was appointed as one of three Investigative Technology Coordinators in the U.S. Attorney s Office responsible for advising prosecutors and federal agents on an array of emerging law enforcement technologies. During his tenure at the U.S. Attorney s Office, Mr. Kim also prosecuted, argued, and tried significant cases in the Narcotics, Criminal Appeals, and General Crimes and Complaints Sections. He gained expertise in the federal wiretap and pen register statutes, electronic surveillance and covert investigative techniques, and criminal constitutional law. Mr. Kim has authored numerous appellate briefs and supervised the preparation of more than 70 briefs filed in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. On behalf of the U.S. Department of Justice, Mr. Kim briefed and argued United States v. Arnold, the first appeal of its kind in the Ninth Circuit involving the constitutionality of electronic-content searches of computers and other digital storage media at the United States border. Before his years in government service as a federal prosecutor, Mr. Kim was an associate with the law firm of Munger, Tolles & Olson, where for three years he represented corporations and individuals in complex, multiparty civil litigation, high-stakes corporate transactions, and white-collar criminal defense. Mr. Kim also served as a law clerk to the Honorable Sidney R. Thomas, Circuit Judge, on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and to the Honorable Stephen V. Wilson, District Judge, on the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. Mr. Kim earned his J.D., magna cum laude, from Georgetown University Law Center, where he graduated as a member of the Order of the Coif and served on law review. Mr. Kim received his B.A., with special distinction, from the University of Oklahoma, where he was awarded the prestigious Carl Albert Award for the Most Distinguished Graduate in the College of Arts & Sciences.
