Dr. Volk joined CCT in 2002 as Sub-Investigator and quickly assumed responsibility as Principal Investigator on clinical trials in the Psychotropic and Neuroscience area. To date he has served as Principal Investigator on over 15 successfully completed studies and Sub-investigator on 50 additional trials. Dr. Volk's main responsibilities include consultation, evaluation and care for study patients. With an extensive background in treating chronic and persistent mental illness both as a community psychiatrist for LA County-USC Medical Center and in private practice the past 10 years, Dr. Volk is Board Certified in Psychiatry and Neurology. During the late 1990s, Dr. Volk was the lead psychiatrist for the LA County, the largest public mental health program in the U.S., the Intensive Case Management Program, which was an outreach program designed to treat people with Schizophrenia who were refractory to conventional treatment. During that time, Dr. Volk served as President of the Board of Directors for Shelter First, a non-profit agency with the mission to provide affordable housing to the chronically mentally ill in Los Angeles. He also served as elected representative for psychiatrists on the Advisory Committee to the Director of the LA County Dept. of Mental Health. In addition, Dr. Volk taught and supervised residents in the Dept. of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at USC, as an Associate Professor of Behavioral Science. Dr. Volk has also been in the private practice of psychiatry over the past 10 years, with offices in Hermosa Beach and Downey, California. His areas of interest include chronic mental illness (Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder), psychosomatics, pain management, and short-term dynamic psychotherapy. He is on staff at Del Amo Hospital in Torrance, CA. Having completed his residency in Psychiatry from the LA County Medical Center (LAC)/Univ. of Southern California (USC) in 1993, Dr. Volk then went on to complete his fellowship training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at LAC/USC in 1995. He served as Chief Resident in the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry during that time. Dr. Volk graduated from the University of Michigan-Honors College in 1985 with a degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology. He got his start in research by completing his undergraduate honors thesis in wound healing in the Dept. of Dermatology at the UM. He received his MD degree in 1990 from Loyola University in Chicago, where he continued to do basic science research in the Dept. of Pathology in the area of thrombosis and homeostasis. He received the Sandoz Pharmaceutical Award for patient care as a medical student. |
