Steve is a patent attorney located in our Tyson’s Corner office. Steve’s practice focuses primarily on patent prosecution and counseling involving computer hardware, software, and electronic technologies. Steve specializes in preparing and prosecuting patent applications for inventions related to embedded systems that include digital signal processing, microprocessors or microcontrollers. Steve also prosecutes patent applications directed to inventions including combinations of hardware and software.Patent Prosecution Provisional, Non-provisional and PCT Applications As part of his patent prosecution practice, Steve writes and files provisional patent applications, non-provisional patent applications and international patent applications (PCT applications). Steve coordinates the filing and prosecution of foreign patent applications for domestic clients. Steve also conducts inventor interviews and analyzes invention disclosures for clients seeking advice on what inventions may be present and how to obtain patent protection for those inventions. Patent Counseling Validity, Infringement, and Freedom-to-operate Steve devotes a significant portion of his practice to patent counseling matters such as infringement analyses, freedom to operate (or clearance) studies, patentability studies and patent validity studies based on prior art searches. His analyses and studies of prior art search results are used in the drafting and preparation of various types of opinion letters such as infringement, patent validity and freedom to operate. Steve also conducts in-person prior art searches when significant client matters require this level of service and the technical subject matter involved calls for a very high level of technical analysis at the search stage.Embedded Software Engineering Experience Steve has ten years of non-legal industry experience as a software engineer and consultant in the defense, aerospace, and telecommunications sectors.
