Stephen P. Appel is President of Sales and Marketing, overseeing revenue for all of ION Media Networks sales divisions, including network sales as well as local, national and long-form sales for the company’s owned and operated television stations.
Mr. Appel was the key architect in the development of the company’s program consulting agreement with NBC Studios and NBC Entertainment for the 2004-2005 season, and was also instrumental in the creation of the company’s national sales department with NBC, which represented over 40 ION television stations. In addition to his sales responsibilities, Mr. Appel manages the marketing, research and promotions efforts for the network and the company’s station group.
Prior to joining the company as Senior Vice President, National Sales in March 1999, Mr. Appel was Vice President/Director of Sales for Seltel Television Sales in New York where he managed the advertising sales revenues for 19 sales offices, helping increase Seltel's revenues over his tenure. His earlier positions at Seltel include New York Team Manager and Account Executive. From 1985 to 1991, Mr. Appel worked for the ABC Radio Group and its owned and operated WABC 77 AM in New York, where he was Director of Sales, and previously, an account executive. During his tenure with WABC, he managed and coordinated advertising sales for clients including the New York Yankees, CFL Football, NBA Game of the Week and the New Jersey Devils. Mr. Appel also held prior sales positions with Blair, Eastman and Nationwide Cablerep, and started his career as an account executive at Worldvision Syndicated Television Sales.
