N. Stanley Harding was born in Salt Lake City, UT and attended Olympus High School where he graduated in 1970. He began his college career at the University of Utah majoring in Chemical Engineering; following a two year mission in France and Switzerland for the LDS Church, he resumed his education at Brigham Young University. He graduated with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering with Minors in French and Chemistry in 1977. He continued at BYU working for Dr. L. Douglas Smoot, as his major professor, where he completed his Doctorate in Chemical Engineering in 1980 with a graduate minor in Mathematics. His research involved the influence of burner operating parameters on the formation of NOx in pulverized coal combustion systems. Following his graduate work, Dr. Harding went to work in September, 1980 for Conoco in Ponca City, OK in their special projects division. At this time, Conoco and its subsidiary, Consolidation Coal Company, were beginning to change their focus for coal research from long-term (gasification and liquefaction) to short-term, immediate support to the coal company, i.e., combustion. Dr. Harding $B!G (Bs responsibilities included the design of a pilot-scale combustion furnace for the company. In December, 1980 all combustion research was transferred to the Pittsburgh, PA area (Library, PA) to be nearer to Consol coal company. The new pilot-scale facility was to be built at the research center for Consol. He was promoted to Supervisor of the Combustion Group at Consolidation Coal Co. with the major responsibility of establishing a research program in support of the Consol Marketing Department. The Combustion Group had an annual budget of $3,000,000 and Dr. Harding directed programs concerned with: 1) laboratory and fundamental coal and combustion studies; 2) pilot-scale research projects including the design of a one-of-a-kind test furnace; 3) boiler monitoring programs and testing services; and 4) combustion correlations and model development. Dr. Harding's areas of expertise include coal quality effects on power plants, combustion optimization, pollutant formation and abatement, coal blend characterization (including biomass/coal blends), trace element distribution during combustion, ash deposition and control, and fly ash collection/opacity control. Dr. Harding is currently responsible for coal quality, environmental, and engineering studies at Reaction Engineering International. He is involved in assessment of coal blending strategies for SO2 compliance, evaluation of fuel properties on NOx formation, technical assessment of cofiring biomass and coal in boilers, and design of pilot-scale combustion facilities. Dr. Harding is the technical organizer for the EPRI biennial International Conference on Coal Quality Effects on Power Plants and is the Chairman of the ASME Deposit and Corrosion Committee. He is an expert witness on coal quality effects on power plants and has directed projects throughout the world on the design and proper use of pilot test facilities to assess fuel quality impacts on boiler performance.
