Sidney Hellman Biography :

Qualifications

* Languages: C/C++, Java, Tcl/Tk, FORTRAN, Pascal, Basic, Various shells, X via Xlib and Xview, HTML and CGI.

* Database Design/Programming/Administration: SQL, PSQL.

* System Administration: Solaris, SunOS, Linux, Interactive UNIX, VAX/VMS, DOS/Windows.

* Process Control/PLC programming.

* Electronics: Analog and Digital. Microprocessor circuit design and programming.

Programming Experience

Designed and wrote X-windows based, multi-tasking software suite to program many Data Acquisition Systems (DAS) from one central UNIX workstation. The final system was able to program a few hundred DASes identically. The old method was to train volunteers to individually program each unit, resulting in many user errors.

Participated in the design and development team that implemented the PASSCAL (Program for the Array Seismic Studies of the Continental Lithosphere) software suite. This software provided a data processing path from raw data to an organized database. As the technical capabilities of Data Acquisition hardware have increased over time, so too has the volume of data collected. With some experiments generating gigabtyes of data per day, an organized database along with integrated processing tools have become necessary; our group successfully created and deployed this processing system.

Designed and wrote software for conversion of seismic data to the Standard for Exchange of Earthquake Data (SEED). This included converting between database schemata.

Designed and wrote X-windows software for displaying seismic data in near real-time.

Extended and augmented PASSCAL Quick Look (PQL), an X-windows seismic viewing tool. My additions and modifications included support for new data types, filtering of data, recursive magnification, trace comparison and trace sorting.

Pioneered the use of the Linux Operating System in seismology. "Linux in Field Seismology" by Sid Hellman, Linux Journal, August, 1995.

Wrote parallel processing library routines on a VAX/VMS system. This system was used in high energy particle physics on a micro VAX cluster to speed up analysis time.

Ported DOS based Mass Spectrometer code, enabling one piece of code to control Mass Spectrometers built by different manufacturers. This project had a limited budget for salvaging an old Mass Spectrometer. I came in under budget and was able to value-add features.

Wrote multi-tasking software for the control of two Noble Gas Mass Spectrometers and their inlet systems. The system automated and synchronized the sample preparation and the sample measurement cycles, enabling the unattended operation and simultaneous analysis of one sample while preparing the next sample for analysis.

As a Research Engineer, designed and directed construction of two complete Mass Spectrometer Laboratories. During the course of these projects, I supervised the work of three technical personnel. These employees had training in basic electronics, computers and high vacuum systems.

System Administration Experience

Remotely administered approximately 15 SunOS machines while they were deployed in the field. My group wrote software for and provided workstations to seismologists. Sending unix workstations into the field with untrained users required periodic system administration either via the Internet or via fax/phone for experiments in very remote locations"Linux.

As a full time tele-commuter for the last two years, I performed the sole system administration for the Solaris, SunOS, Linux, and Windows95 machines in my home office.
