Shelly Sites grew up in Richmond, Indiana. Shelly grew up in a loving Christian household, the youngest of 4 children. She says her father is her hero, and her mother is his side-kick. Shelly’s character has been defined by her faith in Christ, and says she’s very excited to have her first home in the heart of the Bible Belt. Though she was apprehensive leaving her family and boyfriend back in Indiana, she says she couldn’t be happier living and working in Amarillo, at ProNews 7.
The Midwest was a great place to experience various types of weather, and that may have been the contributing factor to her original interest in meteorology. She attended Ball State University and majored in Geography, emphasis in Operational Meteorology and Climatology. She wasn’t sure she wanted to pursue a career in broadcast meteorology at first, but eventually warmed up to the idea after discovering Ball State’s Storm Chase Team. A month-long storm chase all over the country piqued her interest in atmospheric sciences and she was hooked.
Following in the footsteps of David Letterman, she applied herself to learning the trade in the field of telecommunications at Ball State. Her last semester of college, Shelly enrolled in a program that would allow her to get experience reporting, anchoring, and most importantly broadcasting the weather to the good people of East Central Indiana.
This is Shelly’s first job right out of college, and she is very enthusiastic. She says the diverse weather of the High Plains is ideal for a weather lover who is eager to learn more and gain valuable instruction from those more experienced than her. |
