Sergio Kapusta joined Shell’s materials science and engineering department in 1983; since then he has held many roles in up- and downstream R&D, upstream operations, engineering and technical services. Sergio’s current role as regional manager of the upstream materials and integrity team has become more challenging since his appointment as chief scientist, materials, in May 2006.mThe role of chief scientist was created to reinforce Shells’ commitment to science, technology and innovation. The chief scientists are internationally recognised experts in their individual fields. They deliver innovative technology that has a strong impact on wider business development. Jeroen van der Veer, chief executive, Royal Dutch Shell plc, notes I believe these appointments will help us retain, value and develop that expertise, which will not only be good for the individuals, but also for our business and the energy industry as a whole. Sergio says, It is a great honour to be appointed to the role of chief scientist in materials. I consider it to be both the culmination of an exciting career in materials technology in Shell and the beginning of a new and exciting journey for our company. The creation of chief scientists is a clear example of the importance that technology will play in ensuring the future of Shell. The emphasis that the business places on technology as a key differentiator in a very competitive industry provides a great opportunity for our staff to excel in what we do best: delivering innovative solutions to the world’s energy needs. I see several facets to the role of chief scientist. At the individual level, we each lead an important technical discipline: in my case materials and corrosion. We also serve as role models for attracting and retaining talented staff who are looking for a career in technology. As a group, we champion key technologies that Shell needs to master to succeed. We also serve as a sounding board to help the chief technology officers to develop and implement the strategies that will deliver these key technologies. The chief scientists are also external ambassadors who carry the message to the academic world of Shell’s commitment to technology. Sergio holds a BSc in chemical engineering from the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina, and a PhD in chemistry from Rice University, Houston, USA. His relationship with Rice University continues: he is a member of the Rice staff and directs research in corrosion mechanisms and corrosion control, and he has recently completed studying for an MBA. Sergio is a professional chemical engineer licensed in the State of Texas, and a distinguished member of NACE International (the corrosion society), the Society of Petroleum Engineers, and the Electrochemical Society. In 2004, he was honoured with a NACE Technical Achievement Award for his contributions to the advancement of corrosion and materials science and engineering. In a world of continuous improvement, Sergio believes that Shell provides the best environment for professional excellence. We are only limited by the extent of our imagination, as the possibilities are infinite. He hopes to help Shell become the technology leader in the energy industry by developing and implementing innovative materials solutions. |
