Scott S. Poelman is a tax lawyer. He has helped clients navigate the tax impacts of multi-million dollar business transactions, including the construction of a $150 million wastewater treatment facility in Mexico. He has prepared documents for real estate syndications in states that include California, Colorado, Utah, and Texas. He has provided advice and prepared documents regarding, among other things, entity formation, equity incentive plans, executive employment agreements, joint ventures, and tax-exempt status as a public charity or private foundation.
Scott has helped clients navigate the tax impacts of multi-million dollar estate plans, including transfers from an estate worth $250 million to irrevocable trusts. He has prepared trusts and amendments for multi-million dollar estates, including distribution provisions for an estate worth $85 million. He has provided advice and prepared documents regarding many aspects of successful estate plans, including fundamental estate planning documents such as revocable living trusts, wills, general powers of attorney, powers of attorney for health, and living wills.
Scott has worked in many areas related to trust and probate administration, including the gathering and sale of assets, payment of debts, creation of guardianships, and distribution of assets. He has experience with tax returns for private foundations and has prepared numerous estate tax returns.
Scott was born in Utah in 1977. He lived in Northern California for most of his first nine years and then returned to Utah in 1986. He served a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Japan from 1996 to 1998 and graduated from Brigham Young University with a B.A. in English and a minor in Japanese in 2001. He graduated from Wake Forest University School of Law with a J.D. in 2004, was admitted to practice law in California that same year, and then graduated from the University of San Diego School of Law with an LL.M. in taxation in 2005. He practiced in an 18-member tax team at one of the largest firms in San Diego Procopio, Cory, Hargreaves & Savitch LLP for two years until April 2007. He joined the tax practice at Jones Waldo Holbrook & McDonough, PC, in June 2007.
Scott enjoys acting as pro bono legal counsel for Empowering Nations, a Utah nonprofit tax-exempt organization committed to fighting poverty throughout the world. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with family and friends, serving in his church, playing ultimate frisbee, playing racquetball, riding bikes, and reading. |
