Support international, multi-jurisdictional gaming practice group, with emphasis on assisting tribal clients with all aspects of gaming development
Provide tribes with legislative assistance and legal advice with regard to gaming, land claims, and trust asset management
Research and assist in drafting amicus curiae brief for Jicarilla Apache Nation, lessors and royalty owners of oil and gas leases, resulting in a favorable U.S. Supreme Court decision for client
Drafted and submitted comments to the Department of Interior in response to proposed revisions of regulations governing the leasing of Indian lands
Assisted in drafting comments to the Department of Interior in response to proposed plan to implement a congressionally mandated study of energy rights-of-way on Indian lands
Research at BIA agency offices to assist in drafting jurisdictional statements for tribal clients seeking Treatment as a State under the Safe Drinking Water Act
Collaborate with congressional and agency staff regarding clients legislative needs and priorities; meet with tribal leaders, congressional and agency staff; monitor ongoing legislative and administrative issues affecting clients' interests and Indian Country in general; and travel to clients' reservations to brief tribal leaders on same
Review and comment on tribal codes and acts; suggest appropriate revisions and draft substitute language; and propose and draft additional provisions
Research and compose client and internal memoranda on various topics of Indian law including, but not limited to, tribal sovereign immunity, tribal criminal and civil jurisdiction, tribal self-determination, the federal trust responsibility, Indian gaming, and various aspects of environmental law.
