Sandy focuses her practice on the defense of regulatory investigations and proceedings for the financial services industry, as well as disciplinary investigations and proceedings against lawyers and other professionals. She has extensive experience in the areas of securities and financial fraud, investor-broker and investment banking disputes, shareholder derivative and shareholder class actions, and other complex commercial litigation.Sandy's experience includes representing clients confronted with investigations and disciplinary proceedings brought by the SEC, self-regulatory organizations such as the NASD, NYSE, state regulators and state disciplinary boards. She also has represented brokers and broker-dealers in arbitrations of customer claims and other federal and state securities law claims, as well as investment bankers in federal and state court in arbitration hearings and trials across the country.Sandy is also serving as co-counsel with the Texas Defender Service on a death penalty matter. In 1998, Rodney Reed was convicted and sentenced to death for the April 1996 murder of Stacey Stites in Bastrop County, Texas. In 2003, the Texas Defender Service filed a federal habeas petition raising claims of actual innocence, suppression of exculpatory evidence, ineffective assistance of counsel and the unconstitutionality of the Texas capital sentencing statue. On March 1, 2004, the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas granted Reed's request to stay and abate his federal habeas proceedings pending exhaustion of state remedies. In March 2006, Sandy, along with Morris Moon of the Texas Defender Service and former Texas Criminal Court of Appeals Judge Morris Overstreet, conducted a two-day evidentiary hearing on the newly discovered Brady evidence before Texas District Court Judge Reva Towslee Corbett. The outcome of the hearing is still pending.Sandy is an adjunct professor of law at William Mitchell College of Law, where she teaches courses entitled, Feminist Jurisprudence and Professional Responsibility. |
