Ms. Benton began her media career in 1968 at Time Buying Services in New York City. From 1971-73 she served as Senior Buyer at Ogilvy and Mather and in 1973 became Broadcast Manager at Ketchum, McLeod and Grove in Pittsburgh. In 1976, Sandy returned to New York as an Account Executive for MetroMedia and was responsible for selling air time on their stations KTTV in LA, WTTG-TV in Washington, DC, KMBC-TV in Kansas City, WTCN-TV in Minneapolis and WXIX-TV in Cincinnati. In 1978, Ms. Benton was named Rep. Manager for RKO General in Chicago and managed a team selling KHJ-TV in LA, WOR-TV in NYC, WDCA-TV in Washington, DC, WNAC-TV in Boston and WHBQ in Memphis and WTCG-TV in Atlanta. In 1980, RKO promoted her to National Sales Manager of WNAC-TV, their CBS affiliate in Boston and in 1982 was moved into the position as VP and General Sales Manager. From 1982-86, Benton served as VP and Director of Sales for KHJ-TV (now KCAL-TV), the RKO owned VHF Independent in LA. Under Benton, the station tripled its share of market dollars while the audience share remained the same. In 1986, Ms. Benton assumed responsibility for the complete start-up of a VHF station serving the Johnstown-Altoona, PA market. At the same time, she rebuilt the Altoona ABC affiliate, WWCP-TV and then brought the two stations together in 1986 to create the country’s first television station duopoly. From 1987-95, Benton was VP and General Manager for KEYT-TV, the ABC affiliate in Santa Barbara. She was responsible for a tripling of the station’s cash flow in her first year at the station. While she was managing KEYT-TV it was named The Associated Press Station of the Year in all of California and Nevada, the first television station to receive the award in 15 years. From 1995-96, Ms. Benton served as General Sales Manager for KOFY-TV in San Francisco. She also negotiated all programming purchases for the station and while she was there, it was the only station in the market to show income growth in 1995. In 1996, Sandy joined the SJL Communications and assumed responsibility for sales management at their station KSBY-TV in San Luis Obispo, CA. In 1998, SJL asked her to take over as President and General Manager of their NBC affiliated station WICU-TV in Erie, PA. Under her leadership, the station went from a weak #3 to the #1 station in the market. Benton increased cash flow and profit margins while positioning the station as the market leader. In 2001, Benton was named Chief Operating Officer of SJL Northeast, which included stations WOWK-TV in Huntington, WTAJ-TV in Altoona and WBNG-TV in Binghamton. In addition to her duties as COO, she also assumed the position as General Manager of WOWK-TV and positioned the station for sale. The station was sold in mid 2002 at a price considered to be above the market value. Under Benton, the stations in the SJL Northeast group reached record highs in operating performance, revenue shares and rating success. Ms. Benton is past President elect of the California Broadcasters Association, ABC Network Affiliate Board of Governors and the National Fighting Back Task Force. She was named Woman of the Year for 1994 for the Santa Barbara County 1st District in part for her efforts in establishing a successful drug court. Ms. Benton and her husband Chuck have two children, two grandchildren, two cats and a dog. She has traveled extensively and enjoys theatre, music and is an avid reader.
