Samuel S. Rubin Assistant Director, Digital Forensics Mr. Rubin joined Stroz Friedberg in early 2003 and is one of the firm s most experienced examiners and investigators. He has conducted thousands of forensic data acquisitions on all variety of digital media, provided expert written and oral testimony in numerous civil and criminal matters, and worked on some of the firm s most complex and challenging cases. Lawyers, executives, judges, and arbitrators have relied upon Mr. Rubin s technical advice and expert opinions in many high-profile cases, including the federal criminal securities fraud case against former Qwest CEO Joseph Nacchio, the analysis of computers seized from the offices of Congressman William Jefferson, the Senate s probe into the firing of U.S. Attorneys, and the internal investigation by Hollinger International that led to the prosecution of Lord Conrad Black. Mr. Rubin has been trained at advanced levels by Guidance Software in the use of EnCase forensic tools and has conducted forensic acquisitions and analyses of laptops, desktops, PDAs, cellular telephones, and file and exchange servers in both open and covert settings. He has managed and coordinated data preservation in enterprise-wide, multi-terabyte collection efforts for internal and regulatory investigations. He has developed expertise in matters involving theft of intellectual property, securities fraud, material support for terrorism, leaks of confidential information, e-mail based harassment, and embezzlement. As Assistant Director of Digital Forensics and Investigations, Mr. Rubin also manages and oversees the digital forensic work of the Los Angeles forensic laboratory in addition to his investigative case work. Mr. Rubin has been instrumental in developing the firm s regulatory and compliance service offerings and has led teams in the design and implementation of a comprehensive review of the Purchasing Card Industry Digital Security Standards (PCI DSS) audit review for a Fortune 500 company. Mr. Rubin has also been involved in the strategic development of the firm s e-discovery methodologies. Mr. Rubin is co-author of What Every Lawyer Should Know About Digital Forensics, published in The Pennsylvania Lawyer (Fall 2006), and is a frequent presenter and lecturer on computer forensics, insider threats to proprietary data, and other cyber-related topics. Prior to joining Stroz Friedberg, Mr. Rubin worked on research projects for legislative initiatives and constituent issues in the office of Senator Patrick J. Leahy. He also performed in-depth research, analysis, and reporting at an online job referral service at the Vermont Public Interest Research Group. Mr. Rubin has also worked as a legal assistant at a law firm in Vermont. Mr. Rubin received his B.A. in Political Science and Economics from Emory University. He is a member of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences and is an EnCase Certified Forensic Examiner
