After graduating from Hitotsubashi University’s Faculty of Law in 1973, Ryoichi Ueda began his career at Mitsubishi Corporation (MC), Japan’s largest general trading company. His first assignment overseas was in France, where he studied for two years and earned an MBA from INSEAD in Fontainebleau. That was followed by an eight-year assignment managing financial matters at two MC subsidiaries in New York City, including Mitsubishi International Corporation (MIC), MC’s major subsidiary in North America. Returning to Tokyo in 1988 he continued to develop his financial expertise, spending six years pursuing M&A opportunities for MC. Between 1999 and 2003, Mr. Ueda had a series of promotions in which he took on additional management responsibility. In 1999, he became the General Manager of MC's Risk Management Department. A year later he joined the Corporate Planning Department and in 2002, Mr. Ueda was promoted to Controller. In addition to his responsibilities as Controller, Mr. Ueda became a Senior Vice President of MC in 2003.In March 2006 he returned to New York to become President & CEO of Mitsubishi InternationalCorporation (MIC). At the same time of his assignment to MIC, Mr. Ueda was promoted to Executive Vice President of MC and in addition to his responsibilities at MIC, Mr. Ueda is the Regional CEO for North America, overseeing operations of the nearly 60 MC-affiliated companies in Canada, Mexico and the U.S. As of January 1, 2008, Mr. Ryoichi Ueda has been designated Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO) for Mitsubishi Corporation’s North American operations. Mr. Ueda is also an active supporter of environmental and civic organizations. Mr. Ueda is Chairman of the Mitsubishi Corporation Foundation for the Americas and is on the board of the New York Botanical Garden. Mr. Ueda is also a member of the Partnership for New York City, the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of New York City and the Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy. And in May of 2007 he was named President of the Nippon Club, Inc., a New York-based organization dedicated to cultural and business exchange between the U.S. and Japan. |
