Ryan has practiced before numerous state and federal courts located throughout the country and has substantial experience with domestic and international arbitrations, including handling matters administered by the ICC International Court of Arbitration, the American Arbitration Association and JAMS.

Before joining Buchanan, Ryan worked as a litigator in the New York office of one of the world's largest law firms for nine years.

Representative matters Ryan has handled for his clients are summarized below.

With regard to securities and derivatives litigation, among other matters, Ryan has represented: a former senior officer of a large mutual fund complex in a securities fraud class action lawsuit; mutual funds and their independent trustees in several securities fraud class action lawsuits alleging various claims under the securities laws; a large pharmaceutical company in a securities fraud class action lawsuit alleging billions of dollars in damages; and an international investment bank in an arbitration with a South American copper producer that alleged unauthorized futures and options trading by its former head trader.

Relative to regulatory proceedings and internal investigations, among other matters, Ryan has represented: a partner of a "Big 4" accounting firm in an SEC investigation concerning reinsurance; a former officer of a large mutual fund complex in an SEC enforcement proceeding; a senior executive of a Swiss-based international reinsurance company in an SEC administrative proceeding; a large securities, commodities and futures trading firm in several regulatory proceedings; a registered investment advisor in connection with an internal investigation to determine its compliance with internal policies and procedures and regulatory requirements; and a futures commission merchant in connection with a regulatory investigation involving foreign exchange trading.

In connection with auditor liability litigation, Ryan has represented: a Big 4 accounting firm in an arbitration with a bankruptcy trustee; a large international accounting firm and several individuals in a securities fraud class-action lawsuit, a related litigation with a lender of the firm's client and an investigation by the AICPA; and another Big 4 accounting firm in handling a non-party subpoena.

Relative to intellectual property litigation and other complex commercial disputes, Ryan has represented: an international electronics manufacturer in several lawsuits against former licensees alleging breach of contract and patent infringement; a large telecommunications company in an international arbitration with a vendor of products and services; a prominent New York City real estate developer in a dispute involving a significant piece of Manhattan riverside property; an international hotel company in a commercial dispute with a New Jersey company claiming approximately $1.5 billion in damages; and an international confectionary and beverage company in multiple litigations involving claims of deceptive business practices and trade secret misappropriation.

Relative to antitrust matters, Ryan has represented a large manufacturer of medical devices in multiple lawsuits involving claims of wrongful pricing practices and other anticompetitive conduct by direct and indirect purchasers.

With regard to insurance and reinsurance matters, Ryan has represented Westfield, the former owner of the retail mall at the World Trade Center, in property insurance litigation arising out of the events of September 11, 2001, against numerous foreign and domestic insurance companies.

Serving as a member of his previous employer's Electronic Discovery Team, Ryan represented a Big 4 accounting firm in connection with the development and implementation of a comprehensive electronic discovery and records management program.

Ryan has also assisted clients in significant pro bono cases. He represented Shirin Ebadi, the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize recipient, in a litigation with the Office of Foreign Assets Control of the United States Treasury Department, challenging on constitutional grounds federal regulations that prohibited Ms. Ebadi from working with any U.S. citizens to publish her memoirs in the United States. He also represented Senator Carl Levin as amicus curiae in Guantanamo Bay detainees' appeal to the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.
