If there is a word that properly encapsulates the professional career of Ron McIntyre, Supervising Facilities Engineer for PB's Facilities company, it would have to be "service." From his time spent in the United States Air Force to his current work supporting the U.S. Department of Labor's Job Corps, Ron has continuously utilized his engineering expertise to serve his country and its citizens.Throughout high school, Ron had interests in both engineering and architecture as a career choice. In fact, he entered the University of Maryland in 1974 as an architecture major. But after three semesters, Ron decided that his heart was more into math and science, and chose to change his major to civil engineering with an emphasis on structures. Upon graduating in 1978, he began his career at the Tennessee Valley Authority, where he served as a design engineer. However, Ron soon realized that he wanted to seek a greater challenge, one that would provide him with opportunities in engineering management. That opportunity was provided by the U.S. Air Force, where he was commissioned as an engineering officer in 1979.During his 15 years of service, the Air Force enabled Ron to gain leadership experience in multimillion-dollar projects in the U.S. and Asia. He served as Project Manager in support of the construction of a $525 million operations-intelligence center at Osan Air Base in South Korea. In the U.S., he was Automated Information Systems Program Manager for the Air Force's process redesign of its base civil engineering practices, as well as the leader of a $10 million design program in support of the establishment of the U.S. Space Command Headquarters at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado.In 1994, Ron joined PB, lending his program management expertise to large housing projects for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in some of the country's largest cities, including Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Washington, D.C.; Atlanta, Georgia; and Baltimore, Maryland. He has also served as Project Manager for the development of a maintenance organization at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Austin, Texas.At the Air Force, I had become more involved with staff work than with the practice of engineering, Ron says. "Coming to PB provided me with the opportunity to be closer to engineering applications. The comfort of working here is that the firm is aggressive in ensuring that clients will always get what they need. This dedication to going the extra mile is essential to client confidence."Ron's current role in PB is serving as Regional Project Manager for the Department of Labor Job Corps Engineering Support Program. The Job Corps enables economically disadvantaged youths ages 16 to 24 to develop career skills in a structured and supportive environment. As part of a joint venture, PB provides all engineering support services for 117 Job Corps centers in all 50 states and Puerto Rico. Since 2000, Ron has headed the Mid-Atlantic region, which is the Job Corps' most densely populated area.Ron says, "It has been satisfying to work on a project that provides an underserved segment of the population with the tools to come out of a troubled background and enjoy productive lives."Richard Earl, Senior Vice President at PB Facilities and Principal-in-Charge of the Job Corps project, says, "Ron has always maintained a high level of concern and sensitivity for the needs of the Job Corps students in the delivery of their facilities, and he has instilled this same level of attention to all of the project managers that report to him." |
