Roger Black, a New York designer and a founder of the Font Bureau, has brought new typography to newspapers, magazines and web sites around the world. In January 2007 a new format of the Rocky Mountain News (Denver) was introduced, using new styles of Matthew Carter’s Rocky, which was first used in the News. Black guided the staff through the redesign with a series of workshops that dug deeply into the resources of the newsroom. The result is a combined effort, he says, We’re getting close to the concept of a daily magazine. In 2006 a new design of Bloomberg.com, which he directed, was introduced. The Font Bureau, in a separate effort, has produced new screen fonts for Bloomberg’s professional service. The same year, Black commissioned FB Latin from David Berlow for Key West magazine, and capped a five-year effort at the Los Angeles Times with the introduction of a new front page design, with two new custom type families also designed by Berlow. These typefaces are now available as FB Kis and FB Titling Gothic. Black works from a small consulting firm in New York, Roger Black Studio. He’s a founding partner in Danilo Black S.A. in Monterrey, Mexico, and the Font Bureau both started in 1989.
