Rodney B. Hanners, who had been an executive associated with the Kaiser Permanente Medical Care Program since 1995, began his assignment as senior vice president and chief operating officer at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles on April 3, 2006.
Mr. Hanners is the senior administrative officer at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles responsible for radiology, anesthesiology, laboratory, perioperative/surgery, patient care services, ambulatory care, facilities and materials management at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles.
Mr. Hanners had been director of hospital operations (COO) at Los Angeles Medical Center (LAMC), where he has been responsible for hospital operations at LAMC and support services across the Medical Center campus and outlying medical office buildings. Mr. Hanners’ principal responsibilities have included working closely with his Medical Group partners in the planning, coordination and execution of operational strategies to improve quality, service and financial performance at LAMC and its Mental Health Center, the only Kaiser-owned and operated inpatient psychiatric treatment facility in Southern California. His areas of accountability have included nursing services, surgical services, support services, medical records, professional staff services, quality, accreditation and licensing and compliance, as well as the LAMC replacement hospital project.
Prior to his assuming his responsibilities at LAMC, Mr. Hanners was the executive consultant (Chief of Staff) in the Office of the COO and the Office of the President of the Kaiser Foundation Hospital and Health Plan (KFH/HP), Southern California Region (2000-04), assisting the president on a full range of strategic and operational issues, ranging from managing special projects to day-to-day coordination and strategic alignment between KFH/HP and the Southern California Medical Group.
Mr. Hanners was director of the Kaiser Permanente Western Environmental, Health & Safety (EH&S) Service Hub (1997-2000), with offices in Oakland and Pasadena, where he was responsible for leading Kaiser Permanente’s environmental, health and safety strategies in the California division, including health and safety, accreditation and licensing surveys, the safe delivery of healthcare to Kaiser members and service communities, the environmental impact of the delivery of health care services and regulatory compliance.
He was assurance program manager of Kaiser Permanente National Environmental, Health & Safety (1995-97), responsible for effective operation of Kaiser Permanente’s environmental, health and safety management programs.
Mr. Hanners became a Certified Healthcare Environmental Manager (HEM) of the Center for Healthcare Environmental Management (1997), a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) of the American Society of Safety Engineers (1996), a Certified Asbestos Supervisor from the University of California, Berkeley (1996) and a Certified Naval Nuclear Engineer from the Naval Reactors Branch of the Department of Energy (1993).
He is a member of both the Hospital Association of Southern California and the American College of Healthcare Executives.
Prior to coming to Kaiser Permanente, Rod was an Officer in the U.S. Submarine Force (1989-95), based in San Diego, where he served on board a submarine in various capacities, including as the quality assurance officer, radiological/chemistry controls officer, radiation health officer, electrical officer and damage controls assistant.
Mr. Hanners was a training officer at Submarine Training Facility San Diego (1991-94) and a division officer aboard the USS Salt Lake City SSN-716 (1991-94). He was the Submarine Group 5 Junior Officer of the Year in 1994.
Mr. Hanners received a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from California State University at Long Beach (1989) and an master’s degree equivalent in nuclear engineering (1990) from the Navy Nuclear Power School in Orlando, Florida. He is a graduate of the Kaiser Permanente Advanced Leadership Program (1999) at the Kenan-Flagler Business School of the University of North Carolina. |
