Robert L. Clifford became counsel to the firm following his retirement in December 1994 from the Supreme Court of New Jersey. A graduate of Lehigh University, Mr. Clifford received his law degree from Duke University in 1950 and is admitted to practice before the courts of New Jersey and the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey, and the United States Supreme Court. After serving as law clerk to The Honorable William A. Wachenfeld, Justice of the Supreme Court of New Jersey, Mr. Clifford engaged in civil and criminal trial practice with the firm of Cox and Walburg and with its successor firm of Mead, Gleason, Hansen & Pantages in Newark until 1962, when he became a partner in the Morristown firm of Egan, O'Donnell, Hanley & Clifford. In 1970 Mr. Clifford joined the cabinet of Governor William T. Cahill, first as Commissioner of Banking and Insurance, then as Commissioner of Insurance, and finally as Commissioner of Institutions and Agencies. In September 1973 Governor Cahill appointed Mr. Clifford to the Supreme Court of New Jersey, where he served for over twenty-one years. During that time he authored hundreds of opinions touching on almost every field of law.
Mr. Clifford is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, a Life Fellow of the American Bar Foundation, and a Fellow of the International Society of Barristers. He is a member of the Morris County, New Jersey, and American Bar Associations, and served as an officer of the New Jersey State Bar Association. In 1970 he received the Trial Bar Award from the Trial Attorneys of New Jersey, and in 1996 the William J. Brennan, Jr. Award from the Association of the Federal Bar of New Jersey. He is past Chairman of the Supreme Court Advisory Committee on Judicial Conduct, past Chairman of the Supreme Court Professional Responsibility Rules Committee, and former member and Chair of the Council on Local Mandates. |
