Robert Hermes Profile :
Sr. Staff Scientist, Unit Leader - Manhattan Scientifics Inc.

Robert Hermes Biography :

Robert E. Hermes, Ph.D., joined Manhattan Scientifics Inc. (MSI), on September 1st, 1999. He joined MSI by taking Entrepreneurial Leave from the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), where he had been employed for over 20 years, most recently as a technical staff member in the Polymers and Coatings Group, within the Materials Science & Technology Division.

Robb began working on Holographic Photopolymer Media during a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) between LANL and Tamarack Storage Devices (now called the HoloStor unit of MSI). Significant progress was made on the photopolymer material, and the opportunity presented itself to join MSI in order to bring this technology to market.

Raised in New Mexico, he earned a B.S. degree in Biology from New Mexico State University (Las Cruces, NM) in 1973. He joined LANL in 1974, and worked as an analytical chemistry technician for several years before getting married, and then continuing his education in graduate school. Robb earned a Ph.D. in Polymer Science from the University of Southern Mississippi (Hattiesburg, MS) in 1986, and studied under Dr. Lon J. Mathias in the Department of Polymer Science. He returned to LANL first as a Post-Doc, and subsequently became a technical staff member in 1987. While at LANL, he worked on several projects -- ranging from plastic dye-laser rods to biocompatible polymers (made from a component of Garlic!). He has several U.S. patents which can be found by searching the U.S. Patent # database at www.uspto.gov (liisted below).

During his career at Los Alamos, he was awarded a Distinguished Performance Award (Laser Thrombolysis CRADA Team, 1998), a Career Development Oustanding Mentor Award (an honor from the Women's Diversity Working Group - for the mentoring of several women students over the years, 1999), and two Research and Development Magazine's R&D-100 Awards (Plastic Dye-Laser Rods, 1992; Real-Time, Puncture-Detecting, Self-Healing Materials, 1999), both of which were based on patented technologies.

While still employed with LANL, Robb devoted some of his spare time to a successful start-up company based on his Plastic Dye-Laser Rod patent (licensed from the Department of Energy). The assets of that venture were sold in 1997 -- where he realized the advantages of having the "entrepreneurial spirit".

Robb continues to maintain a balance between his work and personal life. He is an avid short-distance runner, pianist, British car junkie (TR-6's), model rocketeer, and a brewer of beer. He lives in the boonies of White Rock with his wife and two daughters, a couple of cats (known as Coyote Bait #1 & #2), a dog, and a chameleon.
