Rick Chang Biography :

Rick Chang is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP based in the Firm's Silicon Valley office. He is a member of the Intellectual Property, Media & Technology Department. Rick's practice focuses on various aspects of intellectual property litigation including, patent, copyright, trademark and trade secret litigation, as well as technology licensing and other related disputes.

Rick has litigated in several federal district courts and before the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC). His recent experience includes working with semiconductor, internet, software, electronic and pharmaceutical companies. Rick has successfully represented a leading supplier of power management components in multiple jury trials in the Eastern District of Texas which resulted in verdicts of willful infringement and permanent injunctions against the defendants. He engaged and managed various aspects of discovery, pretrial preparation, oral arguments and trial work. Rick also actively engages in pro bono efforts, including obtaining a favorable settlement in a Title VII action in the Northern District of California.

Rick has represented many high technology companies, including Matsushita, O2 Micro, Insmed, Selectica, Gemstar-TV Guide and First International Computer. Representative cases include:

Silicon Image v. Analogix (N.D. Cal.) - Currently representing Silicon Image in a trade secret and copyright action involving HDMI devices and technology.

Convolve v. Seagate Technology (S.D.N.Y.) - Currently representing Seagate Technology against claims of patent infringement and trade secret misappropriation involving disk drive technology.

Matsushita v. MediaTek (N.D. Cal.) - Represented MEI in patent infringement action relating to semiconductors and consumer electronics products resulting in favorable settlement for Matsushita.

O2 Micro v. BiTEK (E.D. Tex.) - Successfully represented O2 Micro in enforcing its inverter technology used in LCD screens.

O2 Micro v. Sumida (E.D. Tex.) - Represented O2 Micro in enforcing its power inverter technology. Obtained favorable jury verdict of willful infringement.

In re Certain Set-Top Boxes (ITC) - Represented Gemstar-TV Guide in multi-patent litigation before the International Trade Commission involving cable and satellite set-top boxes.

Rick earned his J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law and his B.A. in Molecular & Cell Biology and German from the University of California, Berkeley. He served as a judicial extern to the Honorable Maxine M. Chesney of the United States District Court for the Northern District of California and to the Honorable A. William Maupin of the Nevada Supreme Court. He is a member of the State Bar of California and is a registered patent attorney admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Rick is fluent in Chinese (Mandarin) and German.
