Richard Egelton was born in Windsor, Ontario. He received an Honours B.A. in Economics from the University of Western Ontario and a M.A. in Economics from Queen's University.
In 1978, Mr. Egelton joined the Research Branch of Parliament as a Staff Economist. From 1979 to 1982 he worked for a private sector consulting firm specializing in economic forecasting.
Mr. Egelton joined the Department of Finance in Ottawa in 1982. Mr. Egelton served in progressively more senior capacities during his 13 years in the Department, including Senior U.S. Financial Market Economist, Director of Economic Analysis and Forecasting and General Director of the International Trade and Finance Branch. During his time in the Department of Finance, Mr. Egelton was closely involved in the formation of fiscal policy and key structural policy initiatives such as NAFTA and sales tax reform.
In October 1995, Mr. Egelton joined BMO Financial Group as Vice-President and Deputy Chief Economist and in September 1997 was promoted to Senior Vice-President. Effective January 1, 2005, Mr. Egelton became Chief Economist. Mr. Egelton is a frequent commentator on economic affairs in the national media. |
