Rick Haviland is senior vice president of construction and major projects for Duke Energy. He is responsible for the management of major capital projects for the company’s U.S. Franchised Electric and Gas business, including several proposed power plants in the Carolinas and Midwest. He is also responsible for the management of the company’s non-regulated generation projects, which include renewable wind energy, through Duke Energy Generation Services. He was named to his current position in January 2008.
Haviland has extensive experience in the energy industry. He has served in senior management, engineering and construction, strategic planning, business and project development, marketing, acquisitions, operations, and asset management.
Most recently, Haviland served as president and chief executive officer of the project execution group for Air Liquide. He was responsible for executing all large capital projects on a global basis.
Prior to that, he served as senior vice president for Calpine Corporation, a major owner and operator of independent power facilities. He led Calpine’s corporate initiative to develop an international business, with responsibility for all marketing, business development, mergers and acquisitions, and asset management.
Prior to joining Calpine, Haviland spent 24 years with Bechtel Corporation, one of the largest international engineering and construction companies. He held numerous senior management positions within the Bechtel Power organization, including president of the Fossil Power global industry unit.
Haviland holds a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from the University of Maryland and a master of science degree in civil engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is a registered professional engineer in Maryland and Virginia.
