Rich Walton is Of Counsel to Buchalter Nemer in its Los Angeles office and a member of both the Litigation Practice Group, and the Tax and Estate Planning Practice Group. Mr. Walton represents corporations and high net worth individuals in resolving complex Federal criminal and civil tax controversy matters. He is also an adjunct professor of law at USC School of Law, where he teaches Federal Crimes. He is a frequent panel moderator and speaker on tax and Federal criminal issues, and serves as Chair of the Planning Committee for Tax Controversies: A Day with the Government, a San Francisco-based symposium featuring tax controversy experts from across the nation.
Mr. Walton is a prolific author in his field, most recently co-authoring the BNA Portfolio on FIN 48 the new and convoluted rules governing how companies account for tax issues. He is currently working on another BNA Portfolio, Responding to Government Investigations.
Mr. Walton’s professional experience includes time with Hochman, Salkin, Rettig, Toscher & Perez, P.C., a boutique tax controversy firm in Beverly Hills, the U.S. Tax Court in Washington, D.C. as an attorney advisor, and the United States Department of Justice, Criminal Division, also in Washington, D.C.
Mr. Walton is an honors graduate of the Georgetown University Law Center, where he earned his J.D. and LL.M. in Taxation. He is also a Certified Public Accountant in Delaware.
Rich is admitted to practice before all of the Federal and state courts of California, the US Supreme Court, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, the US Tax Court, and the US Court of Federal Claims. He is the Vice President of a local chapter of the California Society of Certified Public Accountants, is an associate member of the Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, and serves on the American Bar Association Taxation Section’s Committee on Litigation and Penalties.
