Richard Dees Biography :

Richard L. Dees, P.C. is a partner in the Private Client Department of the law firm McDermott Will & Emery LLP based in the Firm's Chicago office. Richard advises a broad clientele on estate, tax and business planning issues. He has written and lectured on the use of partnerships, limited liability companies and S corporations by family business owners. He has considerable experience advising farmers, farmland owners, farm managers and brokers and other agribusinesses and their professional advisers on farm estate planning, leasing, management issues, business organization questions and tax planning decisions. He also has experience in fiduciary income tax issues including foreign trusts.

Richard is a member of the bar of the Illinois. He is named in Best Lawyers in America, and is an elected member of Leading Illinois Attorneys, as well as a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel. Richard was also named an Illinois Super Lawyer in the estate planning & probate area by Law & Politics. Richard represents a number of grocery store clients, and enjoys a strong relationship with the National Grocers Association, which recently honored him for this efforts to obtain estate tax relief for family businesses.

Richard has testified before both houses of Congress and was instrumental in helping to articulate the business estate tax rules under Chapter 14 that replaced Internal Revenue Code Section 2036(c). As a frequent author and lecturer, Richard's writings include three nationally known articles published in Taxes: "The Monster That Ate Estate Planning and Installment Sales, Buy-Sells, Options, Employment Contracts and Leases," December 1988; "The Slaying of Frankenstein's Monster: The Repeal and Replacement of Section 2036(c)" (March 1991); and "Now That the Monster is Dead, Can You Avoid the Hot Seat?: The Cold Facts of Partnership Freezes Under Chapter 14," December 1993.

In 1999, he lectured at the Heckerling Institute in Miami, the country's leading estate planning conference. His subject was "Estate Freezes," particularly the use of freeze partnerships to reduce estate taxes on stock in companies about to go public or about to be acquired.

In law school, he served as a member of the Law Review. He has been a member of the Estate Planning Department since 1980 when he joined the Firm after his graduation from law school.
