Experience:
Richard Morvillo is the Chair of Mayer Brown's Securities Enforcement group. Formerly a Branch Chief with the Securities and Exchange Commission's Division of Enforcement, Richard has focused for nearly 30 years on SEC enforcement and related white-collar criminal matters, as well as on private securities litigation. He has handled many SEC, NYSE, NASD, and grand jury investigations on behalf of client corporations, corporate executives, brokerage firms, investment advisors, accountants, lawyers, hedge funds, and individual investors. Recently, Chambers USA 2007 made note of Richard’s ". . . 'impressive connections' [and his] 'strength in the SEC backrooms.'"
Richard has successfully litigated several SEC enforcement cases to judgment. In addition, he has litigated numerous complex securities cases, including class actions and shareholder derivative suits, in federal courts throughout the country. He also has extensive experience conducting internal investigations for corporations and has advised members of special committees of directors concerning their obligations and rights in handling and evaluating corporate transactions, internal investigations, and shareholder litigation.
Richard has been selected for inclusion in the Chambers USA directory (securities and corporate governance); the Best Lawyers in America directory (corporate governance and compliance law and administrative law and white-collar defense) and Superlawyers (securities). He has been named one of Washington, DC's "Top 10 Securities Lawyers" by The Legal Times and listed among the city’s "Top Lawyers" by Washingtonian Magazine.

Previous Matters:
Defeated the SEC in a jury trial of insider trading charges against the chairman of a large communications company.
Defeated the SEC after a bench trial of fraud charges against an attorney for participating in a fraudulent offering by a public company.
Obtained summary judgment against the SEC in a civil injunctive action against a former Citigroup/SSB executive.
Obtained dismissal of SEC charges after an administrative trial concerning an investment banker's alleged participation in a fraudulent offering.
Obtained dismissal of class action claims against Wachovia Corporation (formerly First Union) related to the acquisitions of CoreStates Financial Corporation and The Money Store.
Obtained dismissal of a class action against Ameritrade, Inc. in an options trading case.
Obtained summary judgment and affirmance by the Eleventh Circuit in favor of a former chairman of Enstar Corporation in a securities fraud class action.
